Google University

Thought I’d do a quick review of a presentation I attended last week at London Olympia called Google University, which was part of the Technology for Marketing Show http://www.t-f-m.co.uk/page.cfm/Link=116/t=m/goSection=2

As ever I made the mistake of using the tube to get to Olympia and gave up waiting for my connection at Kensington and decided to walk the final mile or so. Don’t worry, I’m not going to do a full critique of the venue and show logistics, but have written this to remind myself to get a bus next time!

So, the presentation itself was designed to help companies achieve more from Google Pay Per Click or Ad Words. If you’ve not used it before, have a look at this, its a great tool http://www.google.co.uk/intl/en/ads/ . Of course, being ever so slightly cynical, it was also a great way for Google to do a bit of a sales pitch, however the presentation was really nicely balanced.

One thing I was completely unaware of is that Google give you a Quality Score as to how relevant your Ad is, so if you want Venue Finding business and your keywords include words like Viagra/ Jade Goody etc, your QS will be low and regardless of how much per click you pay, you’ll never get to the top of the sponsored links. Fortunately our QS is pretty high and I’d recommend to anyone that you tailor your adverts to be as specific as possible to increase your QS and cut down on wasteful clicks.

Also found out that its worth expanding our keyword list to include plurals and synonyms for each word or phrase on the initial keyword list. Loads more of this on www.google.co.uk/keywords

Only real downside is that the presenters promised to email through the presentations after the event, but a week later no sign of it!! Cmon Google, sort it out!!!!
