Reduce Your Carbon Footprint

Each of us leaves a carbon dioxide ‘footprint’ that contributes to the ‘greenhouse effect’. Individual delegates could be introduced to the idea of eliminating their CO² emissions impact by buying carbon credits from the likes of Marches Energy Agency. The Conference People have worked with Marches on a number of occasions to produce a presentation to delegates at a conference showing the effects that the event has on the environment. This is a fantastic way to get the message across.

Sites similar to this can be linked to your events online registration form and can advise delegates how much it will cost to negate their carbon impact relating to this event. It calculates the cost of car, train and air travel and charges a fee to plant the required number of trees to offset your carbon debt. The Conference People already uses a carbon calculator and offsets the cost for all client meetings and travel to events.

Alternatively, if you do not wish to burden delegates with this cost, a total cost could be paid by a sponsor towards the conferences entire carbon debt. A ceremonial tree planting could be part of this process and is a nice PR opportunity.Contact an event manager for loads of other great ideas to reduce the carbon footprint of your event.

A Green Destination

Some conference destinations work harder at sustainability than others. Tourism interests in the UK are increasingly participating in a Green Tourism Business Scheme to save energy and water, and reduce waste, as well as focus on the use of locally-grown foods. On a larger scale, note the recently announced decision that Sweden plans to become the world’s first oil-free economy by around 2020.

In the UK, Aberdeen City Council has been responding to climate change since 2000, and works closely with the Carbon Trust. The city also applies strict policies for sustainable purchasing.
